Step-by-Step Chrome Application

Step 1: Prep the nails

Start with your usual prep—file, buff, push back cuticles, and cleanse the nails. A clean, smooth surface helps the gel and chrome stick better and last longer.

Step 2: Apply base coat

Apply a thin layer of gel base coat and cure under your LED/UV lamp (usually 30–60 seconds, depending on your lamp/ brand). This helps protect your natural nails and gives the colour something to grip onto.

Step 3: Apply gel colour

This is your background shade, and it does make a difference. Black makes chrome pop, while pinks, nudes or whites give it a softer, glazed finish. Apply 1–2 coats of gel polish, curing each layer fully.

Step 4: Apply a non-wipe top coat

This step is non-negotiable. The chrome powder won’t stick unless your top coat is non-wipe—meaning it cures to a smooth, tack-free surface. Cure for a full 60 seconds.

Step 5: Rub in the chrome powder

Now for the magic. Using an eyeshadow applicator, silicone tool, or even your finger (gloved), gently rub the chrome powder onto the nail in small circular motions. You’ll see the shine develop instantly. Buff until you get that mirror-like finish.

Step 6: Dust off excess

Use a soft brush or fluffy makeup brush to dust off any loose powder around the nail and cuticle area. Be gentle—you don’t want to dull the finish.

Step 7: Seal it in

Finish with a final layer of gel top coat to lock in the chrome and give that ultra-glossy shine. Cure one last time, and you’re done!

Pro Tips:

  • Always double check your top coat is non-wipe, a regular sticky top coat won’t work.
  • Want a glazed look like the OG Hailey Bieber mani? Use a light pink base with pearl or white chrome powder.
  • Don’t forget to cap the free edge when applying top coat to avoid peeling.

Chrome nails are such a vibe, and once you’ve nailed the steps, it’s such an easy way to elevate your mani game. Whether you’re doing it at home or showing your clients, it’s the little touch that makes everything feel luxe.
