Being able to do your own nails is a big flex. It’s how I started my journey as a nail artist. I was once a girl who enjoyed getting her nails done and was curious about whether I’d be able to do them myself at home. Guess what? I did and 4 years later here I am painting nails for some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Whether you’re wanting to save money, you hate visiting salons or you just enjoy a little DIY, I’ve got you covered with a beginner friendly toolkit.

Nail file
Filing your nails regularly will help keep them strong & healthy. It can also help you create your desired shape & smooth out any harsh edges. I would recommend using either a crystal file or a 240 grit emery board. The higher the number the softer the file grit. The lower the number, the coarser the file grit. For natural nails you don’t want to be using a coarse file as it can damage your nails.

Nail clipper
Ideal for cutting down the length of your nails. It is important to use nail clippers that can be cleaned and reused. Some tools can dull quite quickly, meaning they will essentially turn into nail crushers within a year.

Nail scissors
Nail scissors can be used for precision cutting and accurate trimming. The curved blades make trimming the nails relatively easy & will give the nail a natural curved finish. Nail scissors are also essential for nail art when used to trim down embellishments or silk.

A curved manicure tool
This tool is used for gently pushing back your cuticles. The contoured edges allow the tool to sit flush against your nail plate. This allows it to glide over the nail, lift off any dead skin residue, without scratching the surface of the nail.

Nail buffer
Buffing your nails is great but I wouldn’t recommend buffing your nails regularly. Remember, it can be damaging if over done. I usually like to take a shiner side and buff over the nail if I plan not to wear any polish. It’s so quick and easy to do. Just swipe across the nail until you see a glass like shine appearing. & lastly you can include any polish you like to your kit ensuring you have a base and top coat!
