Let me walk you through it, step by step, from prepping your nails to that final glossy topcoat.

What you’ll need

Step 1: Prep is Everything

Before you even reach for a bottle of polish, give your nails a fresh, clean start.

  • Remove old polish/ gel with a gentle, acetone-free remover for polish or acetone remover for gel removal.
  • File your nails to your desired shape. Whether you love a short square or a soft almond, be gentle and file in one direction to prevent splitting.
  • Buff lightly to smooth the surface (optional).
  • Gently push back your cuticles & trim away any excess skin.

Tip: You can apply cuticle remover first for easier and safer pushing. I don’t always recommend cutting cuticles unless you’re confident, it’s often better to push and hydrate.

Step 2: Clean & Hydrate

  • Wash and dry your hands to remove any debris.
  • Wipe your nails clean with rubbing alcohol or a nail cleanser.

Step 3: Base Coat is Non-Negotiable

A good base coat protects your nails from staining and helps your polish adhere better.

  • Apply a thin, even layer of base coat.
  • Let it dry for 1–2 minutes. Don’t rush this part, it sets the tone for everything that follows.

How to Paint Your Nails Like a Pro: • Start with clean, prepped nails – helps polish stick better and last longer • Apply a base coat – protects your natural nails and prevents staining • Load your brush with just enough polish – avoids mess and gives more control • Apply in 3 strokes: centre, then sides – for even coverage without streaks • Cap the free edge – seals the tip to prevent early chipping • Let each coat dry for 60 secs – reduces smudging and helps layers set • Finish with a glossy top coat – locks in colour and adds shine • Clean edges with a detail brush – for that pro-finish look Don’ts: ✖ Don’t overload the brush – leads to uneven, messy application ✖ Don’t paint thick layers – takes longer to dry and can bubble ✖ Don’t keep going over the same spot – it’ll lift the polish and cause streaks #NailTips #ManicureAtHome #NailPrep #DIYNails #CleanGirlNails #NailHack #NailCareRoutine #PolishPerfection #BeautyTips #NailGoals @OPI #JellyNails

Step 4: The Colour – Less is More

Here’s where the magic happens.

  • Start with your chosen colour, and apply it in two thin coats rather than one thick one.
    • Use three strokes: one down the middle, then one on each side.
    • Cap the free edge (the tip) to help prevent chips.
  • Let each coat dry fully before applying the next. You’ll get a smoother, longer-lasting finish this way.

Step 5: Top Coat for the Win

Don’t skip this step—it seals everything in and adds that juicy, glossy finish.

  • Apply a top coat (quick-dry or long-wear, depending on your preference).
  • Again, cap the free edge for chip resistance.
  • Let it dry completely. I know it’s tempting to touch everything right away but give it at least 2-3 minutes.

Step 6: Speed Up Dry Time (Optional)

  • Use a quick-dry spray, drops, or a cold air blast from a hairdryer to speed up drying.
  • Avoid warm air, it can cause bubbles!

Allow to air dry for atleast 60s between each coat. Apply thin coats. Use quick dry drops. @essie 💕💅🏼#nailpolishhack #nailpolish #nails

Step 7: Hydrate & Finish

Once your polish is fully dry:

  • Reapply cuticle oil and massage it in.
  • Finish with hand cream for that fresh, finished, just left the salon feeling.

Doing your nails at home isn’t just about saving time or money, it’s a full-on ritual. It’s your time to pause, unwind, and tap into a little beauty therapy. With the right prep, polish, and patience, you can absolutely master the at-home mani.
